BC & The Big Rig ~ Liars & Saints
BC & The Big Rig have a new album coming out Friday October 15th, titled Liars & Saints. This is their 5th album, which they have released two singles off of so far; Won’t Sleep Tonight and Kid at Heart, with a third one, Little Devils, coming out on October 4th.
The band includes Brandon Clark on guitar and vocals, James Purdy on drums, Chris Bell on bass, keys and backing vocals, Ryan McCall on guitar, and Sam Naifeh on guitar and backing vocals. They have guest musician Greg Zink on the album playing keys on a couple of the songs.
BC & The Big Rig recorded the album at BlackBird Studio in Nashville last fall. The album was mixed by Jeron Nix at Desperado Sound in Marlow and mastered by Adam Chamberlain of Adam C Mastering in Oklahoma City. Album Artwork is by Ragan Parkerson of TableZero Studios in Stillwater.
“We ran into an opportunity to record at a studio in Nashville, a very highly acclaimed studio, BlackBird Studios. John McBride is the owner of that studio. His wife is Martina McBride, and John was Martina’s long time studio engineer, and long time front of house engineer. He started this studio, he’s a big Beatles fan, that’s why it’s named BlackBird studios,” said Naifeh.
BlackBird Studios has an academy for audio engineers, where they can earn college credit. Students get to learn in this top-notch, world-class facility, which also has a full working venue in it as well.
“I’ve worked in audio so long, and being an audio nerd, I was familiar with the studio and the program and was personally excited to go record there. Jerron and Adam are both great friends of mine, so I kind of just project managed the album,” said Naifeh.
The album features 11 songs, and definitely keeps with the band’s signature shred-dirt style. It’s a nice collection of diverse subjects and emotions, while still being a cohesive group of songs that fall into the album title of Liars and Saints. The lyrics are thought provoking at times and lighthearted and fun at other times, and the entire band shows off their impressive talent with each and every tune.
“When you get down to it, we’re all liars and saints at points in our lives...we are heathens and healers, fools and fishermen, fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers; Tulsa’s BC &The Big Rig have sonically represented and packaged that up for all of us to stick in our ears. On this latest offering, you get fat grooves, introspective narratives, and an abundance of guitar-heavy roots rock. Shred dirt at its finest.”
“It’s been cool to see it come together. It’s really progressed. It has songs on it that we had been playing for a long time, and there are songs on it that were written during that time in Nashville, a couple days before they were recorded. Won’t Sleep Tonight was finished the night before we recorded it. We had an air b-n-b in Nashville while we were recording, and we could just go back and work on songs at night. Our good friend Adam Hernandez, he’s a guitar player and band leader for Lauren Alaina, and lives out in Nashville, he came out and helped us finish that song that night and got writing credit on that, he contributed the bridge,” said Naifeh.
Naifeh said this album has the freshest ideas they’ve ever had going into the studio, most of the time they go in already knowing what they are going to do. While on this album, they had a plan, the plan continued to evolve the whole time they recorded it.
Just a little taste of what you will find on the album:
Won’t Sleep Tonight– “A graduate from the rock and roll school of Tom Petty & Heartbreakers. Straightforward with no twists or turns. The story of life on the road that ends with redemption.”
Kid At Heart– “A song of hope and strength written for the weary and tired. As cliche as it is to say, it’s a “don’t give up song”. Tattoo-worthy lyrics and imagery told in a simple but effective way.”
Little Devils– “Little Devils is a song about siblings fighting for rank. Massive drums and scorching guitars create a moodiness that represents the calm before the storm of an everyday functioning family.”
The last single coming out on October 4th is Little Devils.
“That’s actually a funny song too. That one was written several years ago, that I actually wrote about my kids. What inspired that song was, my now 6 year old, was about 18 months old at the time, and he had these pajamas that on the back just said little devil and I thought that was pretty funny, and wrote a song around it,” said Naifeh.
The band also recorded Rainbow Rocker on this album, a Red Dirt Rangers song.
“It’s probably our most complete collection of songs in terms of emotions, and it rivals the energy that the Big Rig presents at a live show. It’s one of the closest ones we have on a studio record in comparison to a live show. Brandon really brought it on the lyrics on a lot of the songs. In particular, Long Way to Fall, just a great song. Kid at Heart has just that punch you in the gut lyrics, make you smile, make you cry. It’s an album that’s meant to hit many emotions, we’ve all been Liars, we’ve all been Saints before, it can all happen at the same time sometimes. We are just trying to connect with people,” said Naifeh.
BC & The Big Rig have some release shows scheduled. The Friday that it is released they have an early show at Hobson Hops in Sapulpa, which is a street festival, and they’re playing that night with the Red Dirt Rangers at the Mercury Lounge in Tulsa. Saturday night they will be at the Hunt Club in Tulsa. They will have CDs for sale at those shows, and it will be streaming everywhere that day as well.
“We’re just excited to put this album out. We’re really excited to have partners on this one, with Horton Records and Jill Kettles of Miss Jill PR who is helping us out with press and publicity. We have Monica Shuey of Harmony Marketing helping us out, she works with our friends Mountain Deer Revival. She’s helping us out with our social media and web presence, so we’re really thankful with this one to have a bit of a team partnering along side of us, and really helping us push this record. This one is important to us, it’s kind of the most commercial, if you will, as commercial as the Big Rig can get, and we’re just really trying to get it out there for people to hear,” said Naifeh.
Make sure to check it out when it drops, and catch a live show soon!
